Thank you. This is amazing. Amanda died 6 months following birth - she was the 1st child, all girls who died as infants. She was the 1st Amanda. Helmer wrote a set of memoirs from which I got the information I posted previously (Uncle Knute's farm, etc.). Berth is mispelled here - it is Bert. Bert, Helmer and the older brother Ellert were drilling water wells in Saskatchewan and the rope got caught in the winch. Suddenly the rope came loose and the weight of the drill plunged, taking Ellert with it. He caught his ankly on the rim of the well and hung upside down. Bert was caught in the head by the winch handle and knocked unconscious. Helmer rescued Elmer and then ran for the new rail line, miles away. They telegraphed for a doctor, who arrived within hours. Bert was cared for in Regina, recovering in the short term but passing away a few years later as a result of his head injuries. Halvor Halvorson, witness here, was widowed before they left South Dakota (he must have gone to S. D. with the family). He had two small children at the time, and gave them to other families to care for as he couldn't . As a result, Henry Halvorson was raised by my great grandmother, Rosa May (Hesla) Hanson. She was 15 and Henry was about 3 or 4 when he came to the family. Halvor never returned for Henry, and Uncle Henry and Aunt 'Nita were just as much family as anyone else.
