I'm pretty sure Samuel accidently got Mary Jane pregnant, but I'm not sure that that was the incident. Maybe her father or brothers went after Samuel. He and Mary Jane moved to Washington State shortly after their marriage, and three weeks later, a son was born in Washington, so it's possible that it was literally a shotgun wedding. The reason I don't believe that that was the incident is because it was supposed to have been about two or more of the brothers. Unless Samuel and one of his brothers didn't know who the father was, I doubt that this is the trouble they had to flee the county over. My guess is that it involved Samuel and/or Henry and/or Benjamin. Arthur was the only one who didn't move to Washington State, and he eventually lived in Iowa, so it had to be some combination of his brothers who got into trouble. I may have to see if the microfilm for Audubon is available so I can spend a couple of weekends looking for the Sellman name, or some mysterious incident that the community suspects was done by the Sellman brothers. I can tell you that if they stole a large amount of cash, none of it trickled down to my generation.
