Another funny thing? I'm pretty sure they fudged the dates of her marriage to account for the birth of Orson if the 1878 is what is transcribed. If you check all of the census before that, for example the 1880 Iowa Census, she is listed at home with Rowland and Mary Ann, not married. On the 1885 census, along comes Orson, under the name of Orson Marsh. By 1895, Willard appears, and now Orson is listed as Adams (they live right next door to Rowland and Mary Ann). Later census and documents indicate they were married in 1888.
Orson was very proud of the Adams name (and his stepfather), and never used the name Hinman all his life.
