I have to let you know what I found. It was random and I found it with the alert system in archives.org. Anyway, he showed up in an Indiana newspaper that had reprinted the article from southern illinois newspaper (and where the event occurred)...very weird seeing it show up in a different state. Anyway, it was a very very small article and it goes to show that in family stories there is a bit of truth mixed with a bit of exaggerated excitement. Doc Jones aka Charles Sylvester Jones was not killed after a gambling game on the way home. He was shot though and that is true but he was killed by a Mine (Mining) Boss defending himself from Doc Jones. Doc was leading a mob of men that weren't in the union and he was shot and killed. Funny how the story is told year after year and then to find out the truth. Amazing find though as this story has circulated for over 50 years.
