Good Morning Nancy-

I am going to make a couple of assumptions here and if I'm on target, I might have some info which will help in your search.

Did you ggguncle David Higgins serve in the Confederate Army during the Civil War? (Although an Alleghany County, NC native, he served with the 63rd VA Infantry. Co.C). If so, he was captured and sent to the Camp Douglas POW camp in Chicago. It appears he d. there 22 March 1865.

The Confederate soldiers who d. at Camp Douglas (some 4200-6000 of them depending on which records you believe) were originally buried at the Chicago City Cemetery metioned in your post. When that cemetery was closed down (late 1860's- 1870) all those interred there were relocated to various cemeteries in the Chicago area.

However...all of the Confederate soldiers buried there were reburied in the:
Oak Woods Cemetery
1035 E. 67th St.
Chicago, Illinois 60637
(773) 288-3800

There is a HUGE monument at the cemetery dedicated to the Confederate soldiers buried there. I believe it is the only one of its kind located in the North.
At the base of the monument are sixteen large bronze tablets listing the names and units of all of the known Confederate soldiers buried there.

Assuming that this is your David Higgins, his name and unit are listed on Tablet # 7.

I don't know how much (if any) personal information the cemetery would be able to provide on the Confederate soldiers buried there, but perhaps this info will give you a springboard to locating further info on him.

Hope something here helps and if I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact me.
Paul
