You've got a good memory Doug...

Yep. Off. Fred Kuncl of the Berwyn P.D. was shot and killed by Off. John F. Cappel of the Riverside P.D right on Harlem Ave., the border between the two towns. The coroner's inquest ruled it an accidental shooting. Its really an interesting story with a lot of twists, turns and interesting characters.

The reason I did the research was to insure that Officer Kuncl was included in all of the police memorials both in Washington D.C. and those here on the internet.

The Berwyn P.D. had a retired badge for him, but no one knew how he died. All of the records had been lost or misplaced years ago. I was asked to look into it to see what I could find out. There was plenty of info floating around (news stories, etc.) but nobody really took the time to gather it all together. When I learned he was buried at the Bohemian National Cemetery, I vistited his grave and there on his tombstone was his photo (I think its made of enamel) dressed in his Berwyn police uniform complete with Shield # 153. Made my day.

Now all I need to do is find out what happened to his widow, May!
