Lewis B. Layton from clark co was in the civil war in the illinois volunteers 10th reg. co. G with John and James Ferguson from Darwin/York area. I have a civil war diary where lewis layton is mentioned. Also e. a. wilson talks about him in Memoirs of the War that you can find online. He calls him Uncle Lewis and says he is a merchant of newspapers, writing paper and "stomps" when he had extra time. He said Lewis was "generally foremost in these harmless, yet annoying banter and encounter of words, and it usually made great fun for the rest."
He died during the war march 1864.
An incident between John Ferguson and Uncle Lewis is on p. 335 of that book.
