I realize this may be a bit of a longshot, but I have an ancestor named Morey Ellis, b. NY abt. 1832. Given the unusual 1st name I have been wondering if he wasn't named for a maternal Morey ancestor. I have also spotted another Morey Ellis serving in the Revolution from the VT area. Do you have any connections that would point in these directions?
