Surnames: Beardsley, Gonzales, Gonsalves, Gonçalves, Goncalves

Hello -

I'm trying to find out more about a Mortimer Gonzales, brother of a Mrs. S. A. Beardsley, who is listed as his nearest relative in some military veteran records from between 1887 and 1892. However, his sister's maiden name would have been Gonsalves. His surname was spelled "Gonzales" on too many of his military records, that I suspect he finally "settled" for "Gonzales" as his surname.

Their parents were the Rev. Manuel (sometimes given as Emanuel) Joaquim (sometimes given the middle initial "G" instead of "J") Gonsalves and his wife Sarah. The Rev. Gonsalves (surname originally spelled Gonçalves / Goncalves) was a Baptist minister who served as a U. S. Army chaplain after the Civil War. He was born on the island of Madeira, Portugal.

I don't know if "S. A." are the initials of the husband of the sister of Mortimer Gonzales (Gonsalves) or her initials. In the military veteran records for him, his sister, Mrs. S. A. Beardsley, living at Colorado Springs, Colorado, is listed as his nearest living relative.

According to military and veteran records, Mortimer Gonzales (Gonsalves) was born Mar 1848 in Connecticut. Other records given his birth month/year and the location as Mar 1850, New York. His sister may have been born in Connecticut or New York state, or elsewhere.

Does "S. A. Beardsley" living at Colorado Springs in the late 1800s seem familiar to anyone?

Thank you in advance.
