I am so sorry and would like to change my earlier posting, but since I cannot, I would like to say that I reread the newpaper article and found that it was her brother Reason that was the first white child born not in Mendocino County but in the community of Cherokee in Butte County. Mendocino, the first daughter in the family, was born in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County on Sept. 14, 1856 and was named Mendocino because of being born there. I have always been told she was the first white child by the family and never really read the story in the paper carefully enough. I did, however wonder about it because of the birthdate of 1856. I sort of thought more people would have arrived by then so that she couldn't have been the first baby. So thanks for making me check my sources better.
