OBITUARY
RIFFEL, MARY MYER
Born December 19, 1872. Together with her parents she came from Europe to America when she was about three years old. Her childhood years were spent on a wheat farm in the state of Kansas. On September 28, 1891 she was united in marriage with Jacob Riffel at Hillsboro, Kansas. Five sons and three Daughters were born to them. One of their sons died as the result of an accident at the age of 12 Years.
Sister Riffel passed to her rest at her home in College Park, Washington, after a lingering illness, on June 23, 1946. She was converted in her youth uniting with the Baptist Church. A few years later she heard and embraced the Seventh-day Adventist message, from which time until her death she was an earnest believer, and cherished the Advent hope with her husband and children. She, with her family, moved from her home in Lehigh, Kansas to College Park, Washington, in 1910, where they made their home, being affiliated with the German S.D.A. Church of that place.
Passing from this life Sister Riffel leaves to mourn, her husband, Elder Jacob Riffel; four sons: J.E. Riffel of Berrien Springs, Michigan, Elder W.B. Riffel of Portland, Oregon, Julius Riffel of College Place, Washington, Elmer Riffel of Toppenish, Washington; and three daughters: Mrs. Esther Reiber of Lewiston, Idaho, Lydia Riffel of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Selma Swinney of Los Angeles, California.
Sister Riffel was a consistent Christian and a true and devoted wife and mother, always thoughtful of others both in her home and in her neighborhood. No small part of the reward for her devotion to the Advent Message was the service in mission lands of her two sons, Jacob and Will. The former was principal of out training school in Korea for nine years, and is now employed in Emmanuel Missionary College at Berrien Springs, Michigan. Will spent 21 years in faithful service in the Philippines. He is now in ministerial work in the North Pacific Union Conference. Sister Riffel's earnest Christian life inspired her children to receive an education that prepared them for service for others. Her daughter, Lydia, has spent nine and one-half years as a social worker, and Selma (Mrs. Swinney) has been a public health nurse for several years with the children of Los Angeles Public Schools. One Granddaughter is dietitian in the Walla Walla General Hospital, and a Grandson is in medical training in the College of Medical Evangelists at Loma Linda, California.
Sister Riffel bore her sufferings with unusual patience, and peacefully fell asleep to rest for a little while. Her surviving loved ones find relief from their sorrow in the sure hope of a glad reunion when the Life-Giver comes to claim his own.
Sister Riffel was laid to rest in the Mt. Hope Cemetery to rest until resurrection morning.
