A special thanks to everyone for their input and very good suggestions. Your fresh set of ideas inspired me to look further and to eventually call the Arkansas Historical Commission. An archivist at the Commission suggested that the "c" was for "common school teacher." The "common" referred to the fact that the school was not a high school or college. He also added that the families in the community paid the salary of the teachers, who were sometimes itinerant teachers. (The teachers would sometimes board with one of the families.) There were no public schools in Crawford County AR in 1860. In Lees Creek Township in 1860, there were three such teachers.
