Looks like this Polly Smith might be around Cullman Co, AL - which is the only place I could find a reference to Lick Creek in Alabama:

I just posted some info on the John Gunter (namesake of Guntersville city and Lake) elsewhere in this thread. Unfortunately, Wiki doesn't have its own entry for John Gunter, but the info was under Guntersville. Alabama (which is in Marshall Co, AL).

I just Googled and he did have son named Sam though.
