Since this post is old, the original poster probably won't see this, but in case anyone else is looking for GL Campbell . . .
It appears there were 2 George Lafayette Campbells both born in 1835 in Greene Co, TN. One is this Lutheran family of Sinking Springs Lutheran Church.
The other GL (not the Lutheran one), presumed younger brother (not son) of Wm. M., is the one who married Susannah Kiser and came to Etowah Co, AL.
The other (Lutheran) GL Campbell was son of James & Susannah (Farmer) Campbell, he married in Jackson Co, AL and he died in MO.
One "clue" (THEORY ONLY) I have been working on is that William M. (in whose house George Lafayette was living in 1850 & who is presumed to be GL's older brother) named a son Bluford (1857-1860) who might have been named for another relative. Not a common name, even back then. I have found only 3 other Bluford's with Greene Co, TN ties. 2 born ca 1839 (one in TN & one in SC); one named Knight, the other named Russell. They are both in the 1850 census, one in the 1860 census (or vice versa). No other record could be found of them anywhere.
The other, and most likely namesake in my opinion, was a William BLUFORD BIRD b/ 1811 in Greene Co, TN who married a Susannah CAMPBELL b/1815. She also was said to be born in Greene Co, TN. Her parents are not yet known.
They married in 1833 in Blount Co, TN & lived there until their deaths in the 1880s-1890s.
I wonder if Susannah could be the sister to Wm. M. & GL? Her birth year would fall between theirs making this a possibility. Wm M. b/1807 VA, Susannah b/ 1815, presumably Greene Co, TN; George Lafayette b/ 1835 Greene Co, TN. Or she might be a cousin.
Some researchers (Ancestry family trees) think Susannah's parents are John Campbell (1793 VA - 1875) & her mother as Cynthia Fuqua (1801-1833). However, this cannot be true for 2 reasons. That couple did not marry until 1821, and Susannah was said to be born ca 1815. And that couple have a daughter, 21, unmarried living with them in 1850 MO census, but "our" Susannah was married and living with Wm. Bluford Bird in Blount Co, TN in 1850.
Incidentally, I think most Campbell researchers first believed Wm. M. might be GL's father (by a first marriage), however, I think most now believe Wm. is probably an older brother (or at least another relative). Others may have their own beliefs why or why not. One of mine is the fact that in the 1850 census, George Lafayette is listed at the end of all the younger children, which usually indicates a relationship other than a biological child to the head of household. Also, there is a younger George Campbell who is obviously Wm.'s son. Not likely that William would have 2 sons by 2 wives, both named George. And, there is no indication whatsoever that William was married prior to his 1835 marriage to Rachel Elizabeth Feesel.
