I went to the Cherokee County Museum today and had a enjoyable chat with David Crum. He said to access the records you have to access the museum. The charge to access the museum is $3 per day or $25 for a yearly membership. With a daily entry, the charge for copying the records is $1 per page. With the yearly membership, the copying charge is included in the yearly fee so copies are free. I went as far as to ask him if he would allow someone to bring their own copying machine and/or scanner. He said he had no problem with that and there would be no charge for copies using that method. He also suggested bringing a digital camera to photograph the records if a person did not want to pay the $1 per page copying fee.
He and I went upstairs and he showed me around. The upstairs is no longer in the condition it was in several years ago. It has been completely cleaned and all of the lighting has been rewired. They have been using a pest control service for a couple of years and no longer have any problems with bats or mice or silverfish or any other insects. The records that are upstairs consist of the following: chattel mortgage records, several books of Final Records, tax records for the county, voter lists for the county, criminal court case records and some circuit court records. I did not have time to compile a list of what years these records cover. On the main floor of the museum are several years of bound copies of the Cherokee County Herald and some Coosa River News newspapers. These are duplicates to the collection the library has in storage. Also in a display case are about a dozen small books of marriage licenses from abt 1900 to 1925. The majority of these small licenses are duplicates of what is shown in the bound marriage records kept in the new county annex. There are also several rejected or denied marriage licenses in these books. I do not know if there is a record of the rejected licenses in the main bound marriage records.
So that is all of the county records that are stored at the museum. Everything else is at the new annex or at the library.
