Hi Stella,
Thank you so much for your reply.
I have so little to go on, as 'Sonny' was the only name we have had for him for years, and have just recently acquired his full name from a source here in England.
He is actually the father of a friend of mine. She has not been interested in looking for him before now, but at aged 70+ she understandably wants to hand some heritage information on to her children. I understand he was married possibly with two daughters. He signed on in Saskatchewan and was stationed in the UK during the War and may have left in 1941. According to my friend's mother, he was repatriated after she discovered she was pregnant, and she says he may have 'gone down' in a ship on the way back to Canada. Was that to avoid maintenance? That may be a story she spun to tell her daughter!
I shall try to get his Service Number which may help. He was good looking with black wavy hair, with a touch of auburn in it, according to her mother who showed her an old passport photograph, which unfortunately has got lost.

My friend was born in Feb 1942. She was kept in the dark about her parentage for years, even being told that her mother was her aunt.

I cannot answer any of the questions you asked. I don't even know if he returned to Canada after the War. I have been unable to trace him through the Family Search website as there are so many Stewarts (some Victor and some Raymond)from Saskatchewan.
It has been a very frustrating search, and I would be grateful for any help you may be able to give me.

Thank you again for your reply, and I look forward to any news that you may be able to send.

Regards, Deirdre

Dear Holly,
Oh my goodness - have we really found a relative of Victor's at last?
This is indeed thrilling news. How did you discover that we were looking for him on Ancestry?
I see that you have only just subscribed to Ancestry and have no other personal or family information.

It is my friend who has been searching for Victor Raymond Stewart for the past few years. As she is not computer-wise, I have been doing all the research for her.
I have chased many leads, and have been in contact with a Catholic Church in New York (I gather his brother was RC) who asked for my references to contact the family, but that led to a dead end, as the family did not respond, and also a cousin's (ex?)-wife Maybe they didn't believe the story.
We have checked newspaper reports, got a death certificate, and are certain we have the right man. We also have an old photograph of the Stewart family, but uncertain if Victor is in it.

If you really are the Holly we have been looking for, she will be over the moon to know that her half-sister (yes- that may come as a big shock to you) is still alive, and that you will contact her.
She just wants as much information, and possibly a photograph, and as you can give about her father. She has one letter written by him to her mother. He never saw her as he was sent back to Canada before she was born. She also has papers which the Canadian Forces sent to her, relating to his service record. They will also forward information they have about her mother, but she will have to wait another two years due to red tape restrictions about her mother being dead 20 years before they will release that information.

She is 73 and living in Kent, England. Victor was in the Canadian Forces serving over here in UK around 1941, met a girl, who became pregnant, and my friend was that baby.
Her name is Joy. She has three children and eight grandchildren. She would like to know of any family health issues as well as any other stories you can tell her.

Please get back to me, possibly with your address and/or phone number.
It's too late for me to phone her tonight, but I will be on to her first thing in the morning, with a warning to be sitting down!
Thank you so much for responding to my search.
Best wishes,

Deirdre O'Neill
