Caldwell and Christie Manor

My Bullock ancestors come from Missisquoi County. There are many church records in Ancestry for the Caldwell and Christie Manor Episcopal Church. There was an Anglican church in Clarenceville (St. George) and in Noyan (St. Thomas). I'm not sure how to record an event which took place there. It could be recorded as taking place in Caldwell or Christie Manor, or Caldwell and Christie Manor or in Clarenceville (St. George Anglican) or Noyan (St. Thomas Anglican). If I decide to do the latter, how do I determine which church it took place in because Ancestry records for that period show event for Caldwell and Christie Episcopal. I'd appreciate knowing what others do when recording events from this area.
Thanks,
Bob Bullock

I was hesitating to answer your question hoping someone else with expertise would help you, but I will try (being on the boards since 2002).

There were many historical and demographical changes in the 1780-1870 period. Vital Acts were often performed outside of their district because of lack of priest or other. Ex: Born in Missisquoi and baptised in Vermont.

If you want people to easily access your chart, I would suggest

Establish the roots of the family (place of residence): Country, Province,County, City : Canada,Quebec,Missisquoi, Noyan (you can add Caldwell Manor at this point in brackets for time frame and historical purpose)

Then for individual records, which are BDM: Parish (if it exists) and Church: St. Thomas Anglican.

Ex: Sylvester P. Bullock
born: April, 14, 1834 , Clarenceville (Caldwell Manor in brackets if the registration says Caldwell), Misssiquoi Cty, Quebec, Canada.
Christening: Date, St.Armand, Missisquoi Cty, Quebec (name of Church is usually in the detailed version of each person)
Marriage: Date, Sutton, Missisquoi Cty, Quebec
Death: Date, Colchester, Chittenden Cty, Vermont (place of death and then place of burial if necessary if different)

It is your choice depending on the type of chart you use (concise or text), but be comfortable with it, so that if you go back to your data in 10 years, your records will be easily retrievable (Caldwell Manor will only be a memory but Noyan and Clarenceville still exist!). You can always have extra notes on the side for reference.

Hope I helped!

Hi Ginette,

Thanks for responding to my question. You have presented a very logical approach to presenting data. As you point out, doing it this way should stand the test of time.

The difficulty I am trying to resolve deals with the meaning of a BDM event taking place in Caldwell & Christie Manors. The records are all together. I have not found a way to determine if an event took place in Noyan or Clarenceville. Maybe someone knows how to determine this. The same rector, Reverend Micajah Townsend, served both. I suspect he used the same register wherever the event took place. If this is the case, I have to decide on the most appropriate way to record each act which captures this reality.

I'm sure many people are doing research in this area and was interested in hearing how each one deals with this conundrum.

I appreciate your thoughts on the issue. Thanks for responding.
