Looking for any info on Richard Williams born abt 1821 England married to Elizabeth G. who had a son William Williams born in PEI 1858-60 (1860 may be the christening date). William married Eliza Jane and may have emigrated to the UK by 1901. I'm looking for any information related to these two men. William had a son Harold James Williams also born PEI (1895) who immigrated to Watertown Massachusetts. Would really appreciate any information!

*** so it seems that either Eliza was a widow or William had left her and gone to England as you thought??

PEI PUBLIC ARCHIVES
All have parents as Richard and Elizabeth or Eliz., all bapt. Trinity Grace Church, Charlottetown

William Williams born July 15, 1858 bapt. March 16, 1860 Charles born Dec. 1, 1859, bapt. March 16, 1860

Albert born Feb. 28, 1862 bapt. March 5, 1875

Louisa born Nov. 11, 1866 bapt. March 5, 1875

John born June 6, 1873 bapt. March 5, 1875

George Bryenton born June 27, 1868, bapt. March 5, 1875

The odd thing is that if the marriage below is correct which it should be, then I would expect Richard and Elizabeth to have some children between 1849 and 1858??

I found Richard Williams in 1861 PEI census and it only lists head of household and then family by numbers

Richard Williams, and two males under age of 5 years, one male age 5-16 years, one male age 21-46 years, one female age 5-16 years, one female aged 21-46 years, so seems there were more children

Here are some marriages I found at familysearch.org PEI marriage registers 1832-1888
Richard Williams and Elizabeth Bryanton, Feb. 1, 1849, witnesses Samuel Turner and George Bryanton

William Williams and Eliza Jane Ward, April 24, 1884 – witnesses William Ward, Mary Ward

Albert Williams and Mary Ann Whitlock, Feb. 20, 1884, witnesses Caleb Jessie Whitlock and Hannah Whitlock

Charles Williams and Phebe A. Cudmore March 30, 1882 -witnesses says not given
Says not given

I looked for the marriages at the PEI archives and found

George Bryenton Williams married Sidella Jardine Jan. 12, 1899 Charlottetown

He was not in the database at familysearch as it only goes to 1888
I did not find Louisa

PEI Archives deaths has

Albert Williams age 60 died may 5, 1922 – matches with Albert born 1862

Richard Williams age 89 died Oct. 12, 1908 Charlottetown so born about 1819 which is pretty close to 1821 so may be the right Richard

I tried to find the later family in 1911 and 1921 Canada census but am having a bit of trouble with that. I did find , I think, 2 of Albert and Mary Ann’s sons, living in NS

1911 WOLFVILLE, KINGS, NOVA SCOTIA
WILLIAMS
John W. age 27, jeweler born Feb. 1883, PEI
Annie B. age 29, wife, born Feb. 1881 NS
John A. age 3, son born Oct. 1908 USA
Maxine M. age 1, daughter born Jan. 1909 NS
Arthur, age 14, brother born Feb. 1896 PEI

So since I found them I thought I would look for John’s marriage in NS records and also for any of the other Williams family in case they also went to NS

Sept 19, 1906 Annapolis County, NS John Wallace Williams age 24, jeweler, born Charlottetown PEI, parents Mary Whittaker and Albert William – stone cutter
And Annie B. Edwards, age 24, born Falmouth, NS, parents Sarah Beckville and John Edwards – sailmaker

John 13, son born USA father born PEI mother born NS
Donald 6, son born NS father born PEI mother born NS
Maxine, 11, daughter born NS father born PEI mother born NS
Elizabeth 7, daughter, born NS father born PEI mother born NS

NS archives has birth

Maxine May Williams born Jan. 5, 1910 Kentville, Kings, NS, parents John W. Williams, watchmaker and Annie B. Edwrads

Mary Elizabeth Williams born Aug. 18, 1913 Wolfville, parents John Wallace Williams , jeweler, and Annie Brae Edwards

I did not find birth for Donald

I did find death for John Wallace Williams, born Feb. 26, 1884 Charlottetown, PEI, died Wolfville, Kings, NS Oct. 10, 1958
Occupation – jeweler, wife Annie (Edwards) Williams
Parents Albert Williams born PEI, Annie Whitlock born PEI
Informant son D.E. Williams of Wolfville

AND ANNIE

Annie Brae Williams born Feb. 26, 1881 Falmouth, NS, died Aug. 18, 1957
Husband John Williams, parents John Edwards born NS and Sarah Beckwith born NS
I cannot read the informant’s name

And marriages

John A. Williams, teacher, age 23, born USA, parents John Wallace Williams , born PEI, and Annie Brae Edwards married Dorothy Evangeline Dakin, age 23, stenographer, born Kings, NS, parents Aubrey S. Dakin, born Wolfville, NS and Susan Pinch – marriage date Aug. 14, 1931 bride’s residence, Wolfville, NS

Maxine Mae Williams age 21, artist, born Kings Co. NS, parents John Wallace Williams, born Charlottetown, PEI and Annie Brae Edwards, married
Horace Gifford Hughson age 24, student, born Petitcodiac West Co NB, parents Naaman Hughson born NB and Mary Brown
Date of marriage Sept. 17, 1931 – witnesses Betty Williams, Wolfville and J.A. Williams, Windsor, NS

And this looks like Albert and some family
1921 CHARLOTTETOWN, QUEENS, PEI
WILLIAMS
Albert, age 59, labourer, born PEI
Annie wife, age 57, born PEI
Arthur, son age 25, jeweler, born PEI
Evelyn B. daughter, age 18, milliner, born PEI
Next door

WILLIAMS
George, age 57, dentist, born PEi
Sedella, wife, age 50, born PEI
Bertha, daughter, age 22, born PEI
All of them show both parents born PEI

I seem to be stuck here so thought I would look to see if I could find either a death for William Williams (born 1858) or find him in England – first I looked for him entering England
I did not find anyone either in passenger lists or living in England in 1901 or 1911 census.
Since you know that William and Eliza’s son Harold went to MA I looked for any of the others there – William A., Eliza G., Lillian Jane, Eliza, and Harold
and found

Massachusetts Town and Vital records, 1620-1988 at ancestry
Mary 26, 1909 Watertown William A. Williams age 24, tailor, born Charlottetownm PEI, father William, mother Eliza Ward married
Ethel m. Garland, age 21, silk presser, born NH father John mother Eva P. Prescott – 1st marriage for both
************

April 17, 1915 Watertown, MA - Lillian Jane Williams age 25, laundry employee born Charlottetown, PEI, father William, mother Eliza Ward,
married William, Otis Studley , age 21, gardener, born N. Cohasset, MA father Arthur, mother Cora D. Reynolds 1st marriage for both
**************

Feb. 12, 1916 Watertown, Eliza Louise Williams, age 25, laundry employee, born Charlottetown, PEI, father William, mother Eliza Ward, married
John Eloysius Gregory, age 26, chauffeur, born Sourie PEI father William, mother Mary Rice – 1st marriage for both

I did not find Elizabeth Gertrude or Harold, but at ancestry there is a find a grave entry for Harold James Williams born June 14, 1895 Charlottetown, PEI that says he died Nov. 30, 1984 Digby, NS – it says he married twice

1. Jessie Alice Lewis born Aug. 11, 1897 MA died Feb. 5, 1980 MA – says they married June 2, 1917 Watertown so I’ll look for that
2. Stella Aleda Greeno – it just has her as born Aug. 8, 1898 NS died Sept. 7, 1996 Digby NS – no marriage place or date

OK so I found marriage for Harold, listed as James Harry

Same database as his siblings above

June 2, 1917 Watertown, MA James Harry Williams age 21, presser born Charlottetown, PEI father William, mother Elizabeth Ward married
Jessie Alice Lewis, age 19 born Malden, MA father George M. mother Viola A. Chapman – 1st marriage for both

So that just leaves Elizabeth Gertrude and I think she may have married in Pei – there is a marriage for Elizabeth Gertrude Williams, spinster and James Adam Johnston, bachelor, married Aug. 19, 1903 Charlottetown – no ages shown and no parents

So I looked for them in 1911 census – I did not find her but I did find a border crossing for an Elizabeth Gertrude Johnston born about 1886 – crossing to US 1913 and it says her home is Watertown, MA so will look for her in US census

1920 WATERTOWN, MIDDLESEX, MA
JOHNSTON
James H. 45, foreman, street railway, born Canada immigrated 1914
Elizabeth G. 33, wife, born Canada immigrated 1914
George M. 15, waterboy, town, born Canada immigrated 1914
Dorothea L. 14, daughter, born Canada immigrated 1914
Retta I. 11, daughter, born Canada immigrated 1914
Ethel S. 8, daughter, born Canada immigrated 1914
William W. 4-4/12 son born MA
There is a birth for a George Wilfred Johnston born Feb. 25, 1904, Charlottetown
father Jas A. Johnston mother Gertrude Williams
I did not find the other children so were they born PEI or ???
1930 has children as William W. age 14, Lois G. age 5, John F. age 1-1/12, Jean E. age 1-3/12 – all their children so not sure about that age difference for the youngest two, must be an error I would think

I only found birth for William Walter born Aug. 30, 1915and looks like he was a twin, another child born same day Aug. 30, 1915 to James and Gertrude – Charles Otis Johnston and he died Feb. 24, 1916

1940 census for Watertown has A. James 64, G. Elizabeth 54, George 36, Lois 15, John 11, Jean 11 – George, Lois, John and Jean all shown as children of A. James and G. Elizabeth – also George is shown as married but no wife with him

all for now, Carolyn

Thanks soooo much! I was getting so frustrated. The names are so common (William Williams....really). What I know of Harold and Watertown Mass you have confirmed and given me a lot of areas to look into. Thanks again! Now I'm on the hunt! I really appreciate it!
