Hello Adele,

Thank you for your post regarding James Archibald Johnston.

Was his place of birth given on his death certificate? I would also be interested in his place of residence in 1901 and 1916.

I have the following notes on Thomas Johnston which you may find of interest.

Thomas married Martha Connell of Crosby North Township (Leeds) before 1857 and she died before 1868 when he married Eliza (Bertrim) Hurley of Ernestown Township (Lennox and Addington). He was living in Bedford Township (Frontenac) at the time of their wedding.

The 1871 Canadian Census found Thomas (47) farming in Bedford Township near the town of Parham (Frontenac) with his wife Eliza (37) and their children Harriet Burley (29), Margaret (14), Robert (12), Isabella (10), John (7), Annie (5), Jane (2) and James (9 mos.).

The 1878 Frontenac County Atlas recorded that Thomas Johnston held Lot 30 (200 acres) of Concession 3 in Bedford Township near the town of Parham.

Thomas and Eliza moved to Newdale (Manitoba) circa 1883 to farm the Northeast Quarter of Section One of the Sixteenth Township in the Twentieth Range West of the Principal Meridian (in the Newdale area) which was granted to him on October 09, 1883. A branch line of the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the Newdale area in 1885 and the town was relocated three miles to the north to become a station on this line. Thomas and Eliza were farming at Newdale with their daughter Mary Elizabeth (Libbie) when Eliza passed away on January 09, 1889 at 55 years of age.

The 1891 Canadian Census found Thomas (67) widowed and farming near Newdale with his daughter Libbie (17).

Thomas was granted the Northwest Quarter of Section Four of the Seventeenth Township in theTwentieth Range West of the Principal Meridian on January 12, 1900 before he passed away on November 06, 1900 at 75 years of age in the Rural Municipality of Harrison. The informant for his death record was his daughter Margaret (Johnston) Warwick who lived nearby with her husband and family.

I also have the following note for Eliza Bertrim.

The 1852 Canadian Census found Eliza (18) living with her parents in Earnestown (Lennox and Addington).
