I have a particular interest in this exchange of information re the Grants. Both my 2x's & 3x's GGM's were Grants. Possibly from Glenmoriston, definitely of Scottish descent.
My 3x's GGM was Catherine Grant She married Duncan McDonald AKA "Duncan by the Bridge". They resided at the west 1/2 of lot 23, cons 2 south of the Riviere aux Rasin or 4th from the lake in Charlottenburg Township. There were many Grant families who settled in this area. Duncan bought this lot for a considerable amount of money in March of 1798. It is most likely that he came to Upper Canada as part of a family and was too young to qualify for a land grant. Because of this it is most likely he came much earlier, married and worked for several years to save enough to buy his lot. I have not found a birth or marriage or burial record for either Duncan or Catherine. There is a reference to Catherine's death in Father John's (priest at St. Raphael's)"Diary of Deaths". Her date of death was 14 July 1843. It is assumed their religion was R.C.
My 2x's GGM was Flora Grant (there is no indication of any relationship between Catherine & Flora) she married Alexander McDonald son of Duncan. They resided on the same lot mentioned previously. There is no birth or marriage information. There is a reference in Father John's "Diary of Deaths" re Flora's death. The date recorded was 8 Nov, 1868. There is a Gravestone at St Mary's Cemetery, in Williamstown. The gravestone inscription records that she died "in the 64 year of her age". This would put her birth in abt. 1807.
If any of you have any information or family connection with either Catherine or Flora or could refer me to other possibilities I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks,
Dennis McDonald
