In Father John’s Diary of Deaths there is the following recorded:
Grant, Donald died Dec 16, 1857 in Charlottenburgh South Branch, son of Donald. *added at age 80 and husband of Isabel MacDonald who was a native of Scotland and died August 18th 1843 at 67. This Donald Jr. would be born in 1777.
In Petitions, Land Grants and Land Petitions is the following record:
Grant, Donald Land Grant 5273 12 March 1800 Charlottenburgh-2nd Lot 13, son of Donald Grant Sr a Loyalist private in Sir John Johnson 1st Batt. and in Capt. Angus MacDonell’s Company.
Grant, John Petition Charlottenburgh-2nd, Lot 17 That he has lived on E ½ Lot 17 upwards of 7 years, left to your petitioner by his father the late Findlay Grant deceased, who received it in exchange for the W ½ of Lot 19, fro the late Capt. John MacKenzie.
There is mention of a “will” here and this may be available if you do not have it already.
Grant, Mary Petition #47, 25 Aug 1811 Charlottenburgh applied under her father the late Donald Grant Jr. has been struck from the U.E. list, 2 persons affidavits who were acquainted with her father during his service in the KRRNY, John MacIntyre Esq JP appeared Peter Grant and Lewis Grant before John MacIntyre both of Charlottenburgh say that the late Donald Grant emigrated from North Britain in 1773 and resided in New York until 1776 and then joined the Royal Standard as a private soldier in Capt Alexander MacDonell’s Company of KRRNY during the American conflict. That the name of Donald Grant be restored to the U.E. list.
Marianne McLean’s book The People of Glengarry shows just 5 Grants from Glen Morriston coming on the Pearl in 1773. She goes on to mention that 2 more Grant families came in 1774 and settled with the Pearl settlers.
