Icould be wrong about this but I don't think that your J.A. Rogers and this Rev. J.A. Rogers are the same person. I recall I researched this Reverend John A. Rogers a lot. I still keep a file on him as a "false positive" to refer to occasionally. Died December 20 or 28th (can't read it), 1893, age 82, born in New York. I also have two marriage records for him. He married Ellen Wright of the City of Montreal on Sept 10, 1861, page 6 of Montreal (Methodist New Connection)records. Also as stated above, Blanch Rogers married on Oct 4, 1899 stated mother was Ellen Sutherland Rogers. The Reverend at age 38, married Ellen Sutherland at age 13, marriage August 31, 1849. Therefore, I suspect that if the Reverend did have a family prior to Ellen Sutherland, he would not show up to be a witness to his daughter's invention from his prior family, particularly if the invention was after the time when he was in Frontenac (1849). If it was before, maybe that's him. I found the guy I thought was him in Upstate NY born the same year, but that John A. Rogers (not a Reverend at the time) had left a wife and kids high and dry and if the two of these men are connected, he never would have returned to his old family. As a tip, if you can get newspapers from the timeperiod in Brooklyn, you may be able to find an article about her invention. If you can find her obituary in a Brooklyn newspaper for him or for her, you'll have more clues. My grandfather also invented something and an article about it was in the local newspaper of the place of his birth, where he no longer lived. If there are multiple Brooklyn newspapers, try the smaller "hometown" one first, rather than something big like the NY Times.
