Sherry,
I'm not sure if your still following this thread, but I'm looking for some help with locating information on Lewis Alexander Kizer of Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. I know he married Emma Barbara Creaser in 1893 and they had 5 children. My grandfather was the youngest of the children (Charles Lewis Keiser) born 1900 also in Lunenberg. I also know Lewis Alexander Kizer's father was GF Edward Kizer born in Lunenberg 1832 and he was married to Issabell. From what I have learned both Lewis and Emma died in the early 1900's. Most of the information I have is from my grandfather's papers. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

The Morning Chronicle Tuesday, May 1, 1894. YOUNG WIFE SUICIDES. Bad Case at the North End--Mrs. Charles Kaiser Ends Her Life With Paris Green. A sad affair occurred on Gottingen Street yesterday afternoon when a young wife committed suicide by taking paris green. The affair was kept very quiet, and it did not reach the ears of the public till some time after the woman had breathed her last. The unfortunate woman was Mrs. Martha Kaiser, wife of Charles Kaiser, and she resided at 190 Gottingen Street. She was not in good health for some time past and occasionally became melancholy. Yesterday morning she got up at an early hour and attended mass at St. Patrick's church, after which she returned to her home and lit a fire. Some time later she put on her clothes and went out again, remaining for about twenty minutes. After she returned to her home she was very quiet, and her sister, Mrs. Eleanor Connolly, who resides in the same house, went to her room. When Mrs. Connolly entered the room she saw Mrs. Kaiser sitting in front of the fire. As soon as the latter saw her sister approaching she dashed a cup into the ashes in the stove. Mrs. Connolly immediately picked the cup up and saw that it contained a green liquid. She also saw green on the woman's lips. She called a neighbor in and salt and water were administered as an emetie, as they felt sure the woman had taken paris green. Medical aid was sent for, but no physician could be obtained, and the woman died at 2:30 o'clock after suffering great agony. After the cup containing the poison was taken from the ashes the woman begged to have it restored to her. Dr. Walsh and Rev. Father Murphy arrived a few moments after the breath had left the woman's body. Dr. Hawkins was summoned and last evening he and Undertaker Gray held an inquest on the remains at her residence, when a verdict was given to the effect that the deceased came to her death by taking paris green while laboring under a melancholy attack. The deceased was a woman about thirty-five years of age, and leaves three small children, one of them being a mere babe only a year and a half old.

The Morning Chronicle Wednesday, May 2, 1894. MRS. KAIZER'S DEATH. Some of the Evidence Taken at the Inquest Monday Night. At the inquest on the body of Mrs. Kaizer, particulars of whose death appeared in yesterday's CHRONICLE Eleanor Connolly, her sister, testified that she brought Mrs. Kaizer to her house about seven months ago for protection. Witness said the deceased's husband ill-treated her and beat her several times. At 10 o'clock Monday morning the deceased returned from mass and went out again. She was gone about twenty minutes when she returned and went in witness's room for some water. She then looked pale. About 11 o'clock witness went in Mrs. Kaizer's apartment and saw her sitting by the stove. Mrs. Connolly, who noticed something green on her lips, asked her what she had been doing and she replied "nothing". She had a cup in her hand and she buried it in the ashes. Witness grabbed the cup which contained a greenish powder and said: "You are going to do now what you did before", and deceased replied that there was no harm in it:-- "It tasted like whitening". She also said "Why did you not let me finish it?" and she got down on her knees and begged that the cup be given to her again. When witness spoke to her of what she did before she had reference to her taking chloroform about seven months ago. She forced the deceased to take salt and water as as emetie. When deceased's husband arrived witness told him to go for a doctor. He ate his dinner and then went to the dispensary. Witness sent for a clergyman and Dr. Walsh, but Mrs. Kaizer was dead when they arrived. Deceased had been private and absent minded for six months. Witness never saw her husband ill-treat her, but saw her with black eyes, which she claims were caused by a beating that was about a year ago. She had never been the same woman since her husband failed in business and when this occurred she she had been in a delicate condition. She often said: "If you knew my mind you would pity me". She used to have crying spells which became more frequent of late, and she often wished she were dead and lamented her husband's treatment. She said the doctor had given her the green powder for vomitting. Dr. Walsh testified that when he was sent for he had a patient in his office. He got away as soon as possible, but deceased was dead when he arrived. Mrs. Connolly showed him some greenish powder and he ws convinced death was caused by Paris green. He attended deceased about six months ago for extreme prostration, bodily and mentally, and believed she had taken something with an idea to suicide. He feared she would become insane. She never complained to him of being ill treated but had spoken often of her husband's anxiety to get work at his trade and his inabilty to do so.

Basil lived in the United States, he would have money one day and send presents to all the female family members, and poor the next. I found him on a 1901 census along with his brother Ted and they are listed as inmates (orphanage). According to Ted Kaizer he would always know when his Uncle Basil was visiting because his canvas bag would be on the front porch, he was a hobo-type, listed as doing odd jobs on the 1920 and 1930 census for California. He died in California. Source: Joan Horan
