Their daughter Ellen Maude PETTIPAS married Francis James PURCELL abt 1883.

Their daughter Margaret's birth reg in 1865 states her parents names as Ephraim PETTIPAS and Judith PETTIPAS.

Son Charles' birth reg in 1873 states parents' names as Ephraim PETTIPAS & Angelica PETTIPAS.

Son Charles' death reg in 1950 states his parents' names were Ephraim PETTIPAS born East Chezzetcook and Evangeline PETTIPAS born East Chezzetcook.

Any help at all would be most appreciated because I cannot find them in 1891 and no deaths on the NS Genealogy site :o(

Thanks!

Hello,

I checked in the Petitpas II book written by Father F J Melanson and revised and republished by the Chezzetcook Historical Society.

From that book it appears you have the wrong family for Ellen Maude Petitpas/Pettipas/Petipas. According to Fr Melanson Helene/Ellen married John Conway, Nov 27, 1892 at St Pat. I checked the 1901 census and John & Ellen Conway appear with three children one of whom is Angeline, similar to her mother which supports this being the daughter of Ephrem. The family of Ephram & Mary in 1881 shows his second wife Mary (Redmond) Richard (from NSHVS), they were both widowed by July 19, 1880 when they married in Chezzetcook. Ephrem's first wife was Angelique Petitpas, who appears to be the daughter of Isaie (Isaac) Petitpas and Perpetue Murphy.

I found another possible girl in the book that could be the one you are looking for. I found an Alice Maude Petitpas b. June 12, 1869 at Grey's Lane in Halifax (also found on NSHVS). Her parents are Abraham (Ephrem) Petitpas and Margaret Foran. They were married Aug 25, 1868, at St Mary's Halifax. Melanson also lists a daughter Margaret Ann. Abraham apparently dies before 1876 when Margaret remarries William Lapierre. I find them on the 1881 census, but neither daughter appears with them. I cannot find Margaret's parents in 1881. They are not with Abraham's parents Luke & Margaret, even though they also have a daughter Alice the same age (her birth also appears on NSHVS). Were they adopted out or maybe not even alive? I don't know.

I don't know if Alice and Ellen might have been used interchangeably, someone more used to looking at Acadian records might be able to answer that.

The only link that I can find between Alice Maude and the Purcell family is that a birth for Mary Ann Purcell, born exactly the same day (NSHVS) d/o William Purcell, in the same genaral area and reported by the same person (P. Power, doctor/midwife maybe) to the register. But I can't find any record online to show that Alice & Ellen are the same person.

Please note that Fr Melanson was primarily working with the Chezzetcook records, so people got missed, your Ellen may be recorded in a different church, then what records Fr Melanson was working with. Also I don't know what record your are working with to show Ellen's father as Ephram, so perhaps the Conway marriage is incorrect, although the 1901 census & NSHVS seems to back up there being two Ellen Petitpas'.

So I don't know if I helped or not!
Good luck,
Dorothy

Here is a follow up, I think I may have found your Ellen.

First the Alice Maude, died at age 7 months in 1870, so she is out.

By searching births by year, names ending in "pas" and focusing on Portugese Cove I found (spelling as indexed on NSHVS)

1. Ephrain Patipas, b July 16, 1866 Portugese Cove, parents Anslman Patipas & Sarah White, married Jan 9, 1866 in Portugese Cove, reported by minister. (Probably Anslem)

2. Sarah Jane Petipas, b 30 Aug 1867, Portugese Cove, parents Samuel Petipas & Sarah White, married Jan 10, 1866, Portugese Cove. This and the rest reported by Samuel.

3. Herny Partick Pettipas, b. 7 March, 1869, Portugese Cove, parents Samuel (fisherman of Ketch Harbour) & Sarah White, married 28, Jan 1866 in Purcell Cove.

4. Eliza Petipas, b May 16 1874, Portugese Cove, parents Samuel Petipas & Sarah White, married Jan 6, 1866, Portugese Cove.

I looked on the 1881 Census on Family Search and found several families under Pettipaw, including
Samuel <56> Sarah <36>, Catharan <28>, Mary <24>, Eph...sn <14>, Jane <13>, Patrick <11>, ELLEN <8>, Elize <6>, John <4> and George <1>. (Family 40, Page 9, Section C)

This Ellen born abt 1873 looks a likely suspect, she is at least in the correct area.

There was also a son Samuel Peter born 1882, he died Nov 2, 1957, it's on NSVHS. It looks as if Samuel Senior may have been married previous to Sarah White, and had at least two daughters, Catherine & Mary.

I checked several other Pettipaw families in Portugese Cove, Isiah & Catherine, Charles & Elizabeth, William & Catherine and Benjamin & Sarah, there are no other Ellens.

Checking a few other records I did find that Isiah was reported on the death of daughter Elizabeth Pettipas as having been born in Chezzetcook. You could probably check marriages & deaths for Samuel's children to see if it is reported where he was born.

But I still can't tie any of these men to a specific family in Chezzetcook, Benjamin b abt 1804, Isiah (Isiae) b abt 1818 and Samuel/Anslem b abt 1825.

Thanks Dorothy!

I don't have time right now to go over each of the family members that you've written about but I don't think any of them are Ellen Maude PETTIPAS that married Francis James PURCELL abt 1883.

According to 1901 Census, Ellen's DOB is Jan 16 1868 in NS - I have no idea whether or not she was born in Chezzetcook now that this Ephraim & Mary may not be her parents :o(

You will also note at the *end* of these notes that her husband Francis James [aka Frank] PURCELL, was the s/o James PURCELL & Elizabeth PETTITPAS b abt 1833 of Chezzetcook!

According to Ellen's death record, she is listed as being born in Ellershouse, Hants, Nova Scotia on Jan 15, 1865.

Nowhere near Chezzetcook of Portuguese Cove .... now I'm really stumped!!

Hi, this is quite the mystery!! LOL I took a peek but haven't been able to find anything on a marriage between Francis & Ellen in the NS Vitals Stats. I did notice that someone in another tree had Ellen's parents listed as a John R Pitts & Sarah Rebecca Fish -- children were born in Ellershouse, Hants, NS. I am wondering whether the "Pitts" may have been shortened from Pettipas -- I have seen it done in some families from Antigonish County. Although their son, Gordon Francis Purcell, has his mother's name as "Helen Dixon Pettipas" -- I believe she is the same person as Ellen Dixon Pitts -- twin to Sarah Alice Pitts and daughter of John & Sarah of St Croix, Hants Co, NS.
