Patricia- I read somewhere- don't remember where-
that it was John Topham that died on board ship while returning to England to collect an inheritance. He was from Devon or Devonshire.

Thanks for the reply. Right, but it was John Topham's son-in-law Gilbert Duke who died returning to England to collect his fortune left to him by his father in 1827. It is written in "The History of Caraquet and Pokemouche".p. 56. Tophan was also from Devonshire England, the son of a farmer. He and Gilbert Duke are co-founders of Upper Pokemouche where I was born.

Patricia,
I just re-read the History of Pokemouche - and it says Topham, after his wife Polly died, was " on his way home to England to claim a fortune left him by his father died on his way to England".

Thank you so much. I reviewed my information and you are right. It was John B. Tophan who died on his way back to England. I have made the corrections to my tree. But what happend to Gilbert Duke?

Thanks again, Patricia

I think he was in Lumber business, as well as a partner in a lobster fishery. He died 9 Mar 1827.

Also, if you look up the original marriage record of Gilbert, it says he married "Mary Tomey? . There's a question mark after her last name. Love there old records!

Right those old records have weird names sometimes.especially the census. I think some of the people taken the census didn't know how to write. They wrote the names as they heard them and some in the Acadian records are the same. However can't blame them too much. They didn't have much of a chance for schooling.

Gilbert Duke died in the woods.

Thanks,

Patricia

How ironic- Gilbert was a sailor- a Man-O-Wars Man, and he died in the woods!

Do you have any info on Gilbert Duke. I have seen info that he was a sailor/ Loyalist. Do you have his parents, place of birth, etc.
I would appreciate any info you have.
Thank you so much.
