The Rev. EMMANUEL (MANUEL) (ESTER?) NALES b. Abyssinia (Ethiopia), East Africa 15JUN1845 (?) (ca. 1839-40), m. 1st 21SEP1876 MARGARET ELIZABETH DeBOISE (b. NB ca. 1858, d. Woodstock, Carleton Co., NB 9JUL1889 age 31 years), d/o James and Hannah Maria (Johnstone) DeBoise; m. 2nd Otnabog (or Gagetown), Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., NB 21AUG1890 ISABELLA BLANCHE McINTYRE (b. Elm Hill, Hampstead Parish, Queens Co. NB ca. 1877 (SEP1872?), d. Saint John General Hospital, Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 16APR1957 age 80 years), d/o Benjamin and Rebecca (McIntyre) McIntyre.
Emmanuel was likely of a 2nd or 3rd generation in New Brunswick as Emanuel Neiles (or Nales) is noted as one of the founders of Elm Hill (Otnabog), Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., NB in 1806.
He was likely the Manuel Nales b. Africa ca. 1840 in the 1881 census of Woodstock, a minister, with a wife, Margaret E. (DeBois) (b. ca. 1858), d/o James and Hannah DeBois and with children, Ada L. (3) and Emma L. (MAY1880).
The British sent a punitive expeditionary force to Abyssinia in 1868 against the Emperor Tewodros (King Theodore), and it may have been about this time, or shortly after, that Emmanuel came to New Brunswick.
If Manuel was actually born in Africa this would suggest that his father may have actually gone there perhaps as a missionary. The 1868 punitive expedition, however, was partly in response to ill-treatment of Anglican missionaries in Abyssinia. As far as I can tell, Emmanuel was Anglican.

Was Emmanuel related to early settlers of Elm Hill? One marriage record names his parents as Ezra and Elizabeth Nales, but I can find nothing on them.
