Hello,

I have an Eleanor in my line....
RUTH ELENOR BETTS, born April 5, 1835 and baptised Janurary 14, 1838 daughter of Helkiah & Melicent Betts by H.J. JARVIS, Officiating, Church of England, Weldford Parish, Kent County, NB. listed as f, lo, 26, English, NB, CofE, Housekeeper, on the 1861 Census RUTH BETTS married JOHN McARTHY August 19, 1878, both of Weldford Parish, Church of England Marriage Records, W.B. ARMSTRONG, Officiating, Witnessed by STUKELY ARMSTRONG & F.B. WRIGHT

WILLIAM HELKIAH/HILKIRK/HEZIKIAH/ JACKSON BETTS was born 1806 in NB. he married MILLICENT UNKNOWN, but I believe her maiden name was TINGLEY. They had 11 known children including eldest son DAVID TINGLEY BETTS born December 25, 1831, NB. baptised Janurary 14, 1838, H.J. JARVIS, Officiating, Church of England, Weldford Parish, he died 1910 burial at St. Paul's Anglican, Browns Yard, Kent Co. NB. with wife and son Melbourne, his wife was MARGARET JANE STEWART born February 18, 1839, in NB., Scottish origin, Presbyterian. They were married in Weldford, September 17, 1856, Church of England, D.I. Wetmore, Officiating. MARGARET JANE died Februrary 25th 1909 at 69 years. Their son was Andrew Stewart Betts and this family is incorrectly identified on Charlotte's (Bathlady) database as David Kingley Betts son of David son of Benjamin.. etc ......

from Thomas' post....

David Betts b. ca. 1781, d. 23MAR1864, is buried in St Martin's in the Woods Anglican Cemetery, Westmorland County: adjacent to St. Martin's by the Woods Anglican Church, Shediac Cape, N.B., north of Gilbert's Corner. E. A. Teed, at the Betts GenForum, sites a burial record dated 25MAR1864, which gives David as Henry’s father. This would appear to be Benjamin Bett’s son, David, who moved from Wallace, NS to PEI in 1820. The IGI mentions a David Kingsley Betts bpt. 9APR1781, s/o Benjamin and Elizabeth Betts.

Most likely this is the same family and Charlotte was just missing a few generations as there is no other mention of Betts family from Kent County listed. This is quite understandable as the Kent County Gen Web has grown into a fantastic research website since Charlotte Smith's last posts were made on these message boards.

The other children of Hilkiah and Millicent whose baptisms I found are...

Elizabeth Ann Betts born 22 Jun 1837 baptised 14 Jan 1838
Almira Matilda Betts 3 Dec 1843; 4 Feb 1844
Clementine Stewart Betts 2 Dec 1845; 20 Jun 1847
Thomas William Atkinson Betts 12 Jul 1848; 6 May 1849
Benjamin Nelson Betts 1 Jun 1851; 6 Oct 1851
Caroline Meliscent Betts 3 Nov 1853; 10 Sep 1854
Rowina Noble Charlotte Betts 3 Nov 1853; 10 Sep 1854

also living in DAVID TINGLY BETTS household... 1861 Census
Benjamin BUTLER, servant, age 17, born NB, CofE, general labourer
Aexander McADDAM, lodger, age 60 Scot origin, born in PEI, RC, Carpenter
the above are not found in the same household on the 1871 Census, relationship other than lodger is unknown but the Alexander McAddam born PEI might be interesting to know if he was a Loyalist connection or somehow related.

Another interesting possibility is this marriage record for Mary Millicent daughter of David Tingley Betts and Margaret Stewart ....
5 Apr 1881 Wacom, Silas of Pugwash, NS married Betts, Mary Millicent of Weldford Officiating - W.B. Armstrong and witnessed by Andrew X Betts & Dorcas A. Atkinson.

I think I seen in one database that S. Wacom was a first marriage for one of Mary aunts or was her brother or something like that.... another simple mistake as his placement on a certain Census report would appear to suggest that possibility.

another bit of a mystery is Mary Elizabeth Betts...

MARY ELIAZBETH BETTS, born August, 19, 1833, Brown's Yard, NB., baptism?? she was of English origin, parents both born in NB., Methodist from the 1891 Census, she was married at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Brown’s Yard, by D.I. Wetmore, Officiating, December 12, 1858, to CHARLES THOMSON, born July 12, 1835, Cape Traverse, PEI., Scottish origin, his parents were both born in Scotland, he is noted as Presbyterian, Farmer and Labourer.

Mary could be daughter of William and Millicent and I do have her listed as such however, there was no baptismal record found for her so I can't be certain. It seemed strange not to find one as the other children were so nicely available and then recently I found more info on the Betts family from the 1861 Census...

Hiram Betts, m, lo, 33, English, NB, CofE, G. Labourer was a lodger living in the same home as Ruth mentioned at the start of this thread - his relationship to this Betts family is not known.
