"In 1839, when Charles Hatheway accomplished a survey of Indian Island, all of Indian Island was divided into seventy lots, all owned by children of James Chaffey I and Elizabeth Fountain Chaffey."
Grant map #166 shows the island containing 132 acres of land.
Total number of houses isn't known, but in 1999 there were six houses remaining (mostly owned by US residents). Several businesses were located on the island as well. The Chaffey family had many wharfes, retail stores, ships, etc. For example in 1827 13 vessels were registered ships owned on Island Island. No indication of population is given. The burying grounds are down on the SW corner of the island.
On Hurley house that is mentioned within the book is that of William Hurley Jr. and his wife Martha (Patty) Chaffey.
