MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Martin and Tilda are my husband Kenneth deForest Solstad's paternal grandparents. Their son Harold Marshall Solstad was my husband's father. Martin was a grocer in Flin Flon andlater moved to The Pas to be near his daughter after Tilda. I am looking for obituaries, cemetery information, or family history. Thank you, Carol Solstad

Re: MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Hi, There is an entry for the Martin Solstad family in The Pas, Gateway to Northern Manitoba which was the local history book put out in 1983 by the local historical society. Let me know if you don't have this already, and I can scan and send you a copy. Tracey Kirouac

Re: MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Hello Grethe, According to the family history recorded in The Pas, Gateway to the North, this Martin Solstad was born in Fisher, Minnesota, USA on Oct 16, 1881. It does not give any information about his parents or siblings. But perhaps the brothers you are looking for emigrated to Minnesota? Regards, Tracey Kirouac

Re: MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Is this your Randi? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N36W-HJ1In the Ellis Island records, there is a Martin Solstad emmigrating in 1906, born 1887. His destination is Escanaba Michigan, where Randi married, and he is going to his sister Randi Larson.

Re: MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Can you tell me more about this family? I may have found Martin, but need to confirm facts. What were his parents names, and where in Norway was he born? What were the birth years of the other children who emmigrated?
This is in reply to Grethe, about her Martin Solstad.

Re: MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Hello, My emigranted relatives were called: Jon born 1876, emigrated 1895 Randi, born 1879, emigrated 1902 -her children with Martin Larsson Aunan were Ola, born 1900 Martin born 1886, emigrated 1906 Gurine, born 1889 (no record of year of emigration) Jon, Randi, Martin and Gurine were children of Arn Jonsson and Karen Jonsdatter Kjerrem who came from Skaun in South Trønderlag. Their surnames were Arnsson Solstad (son of Arn) and Arnsdatter (daughter of Arn). None of them ever returned to Norway. I'm the granddaughter of their sister, Anna married Konstad, born 1891.
Best Regards, Grethe Moe.

Re: MARTIN AND TILDA OSMUNDSON SOLSTAD
Tilda Osmundson Solstad was actually named "Bergit". Tilda was her nickname. Her mother and father were Osmund and Anne (Sannes) Osmundson. Both were born in Norway (Great-grandpa in Kristianson, Norway). Perhaps you are having trouble locating Aunt Tilda because she is identified in her death certificate and on her gravestone as "Bergit Solstad." Aunt Bergit, for whom my mother, Bergit (Berdie) Osmundson Coe was named, was most likely born in Mallory, Minnesota in Bygland Township where Great-grandpa Osmundson had his general store and post office. Her father, Great-grandpa Osmundson was a Civil War veteran in the 4th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, was wounded in the leg at the 2nd Battle of Corith, Missisippi, was honorably discharged for his wound which did not require amputation (and for which we still have the bullet), and for his service to his country, he was made postmaster in Bygland, Minnesota with his store acting as post office. Aunt Bergit had 3 living sisters, Bertha Danielson, Mary Flaat, and Caroline Groshung and 2 living brothers, Ole and my grandfather, Albert. Fisher, Minnesota is a small town on the Redlake River just a short distance from Mallory. Martin Solstad was from Fisher where his father Hans P. Solstad was pastor of the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church in Bygland and in Fisher often shared the same pastor so church get-togethers were perhaps how Martin and Tilda met. Pastor Solstad was paid $82.50 per year in cash by the Fisher Congregation, in addition to a bushel of wheat and a bushel of oats per year from each farmer in the church and a cord of wood per year from each member who did not farm. Martin had 4 brothers, Ted, Peter, Joseph and Alfred, who was a Minnesota state senator for many years. Some of this information can be found on the History of Polk County, Minnesota website. It is possible your husband's father and even your husband visited our home in Grand Forks, North Dakota when he and I were children. I do remember the relatives coming one time from Saskatchewan/Manitoba for a family reunion in the early to mid '60s. There's no other way I would have heard of Flin Flon except through the relatives. There were 50 first cousins for that reunion, including my mother, Berdie, who apparently didn't like the name "Bergit" either, and your husband's father, Harold Solstad. Thereafter, my dad Charles (nick-named Bid) moved our family, including my brothers, Robert and John Coe, to Los Angeles near Dad's family. I still live here. I have been married for forty years, have 3 married sons (one with the middle name Osmund) and a daughter Katie Ann (after her Great Grandmother and Great Aunt Anne) who is engaged to be married. We have five grandchildren, and I continue to practice law. Please note: My mom did not have "Bergit" written on her headstone. Instead, mom's headstone reads "Berdie". Aunt Tilda could have done the same thing but her death certificate and obituary read "Bergit". Norman W. Coe
