The ship was the 'Albert Russell' of Boston, A.L.Carver, Master, BURTHEN 762 tons, from the Port of New York to Sydney, arriving here 22nd March, 1878.
When the first Virginia Veronica who died, her death registration has the spelling Vergenia. Does that relate to anything?
I had wondered if Austrians had come to Dalmatia when it was under Austrian rule because, to me, that would explain the names of John (which I'm sure he used instead of an original name) and Eva. But then, Antoni sounds more Italian to me.
Antoni married Elizabeth Hemfil, daughter of John (??name change again?) Hemfil (possibly German, but haven't been able to confirm that) and Alice Hannan/Hanan who was Irish. John and Alice married in Sydney, where the first two daughters were born, and then moved to the Grafton area of northern NSW, where there were large vineyards and an already settled German community.
At the time, boats were the main method of transport to and from the Clarence River on which Grafton is located, and riverboards plied the river. Perhaps Antoni continued to work on boats.
After he left the Grafton area, he went to Newcastle (also on the coast), and then to the Gosford area (coast again) where he died in 1926. It looks like he needed to be in sight of the sea. Which makes sense to me - Dalmatia looks like a collection of islands to me.
It is unfortunate that he changed names. Makes him hard to track down. But is it impossible?
