Hello, On a "familytree" posting for the family of Vendel/Wendel Szabo b. @ 1872 and his wife Julia Kovacs b. @ 1877 someone has assigned both of these people specific Roman Catholic Hungarian baptism records though I do not know how these were selected as "matches". [The family was Roman Catholic.] Their immigration records give Wendel Szabo's last residence before he immigrated to the U.S. at the end of 1902 arrived 1903 as Nagyhalasz (as ZB so helpfully noted) and Julia Szabo (ms Kovacs) last address in 1903 is listed as Beszterec. Looking at a map, these places are in Szabolics etc. megye and only about 5 kilometers or so apart as the crow flies.
The baptism record assigner has:
Name: Vendel Szabo
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 15 okt. 1872 (15 Oct 1872)
Baptism Place: Egerszalók, Heves, Hungary
Father: Vendel Szabo
Mother: Orzsebet Smid
FHL Film Number: 623848
Reference ID: 32
and
Name: Julianna Kovacs
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 27 febr. 1876 (27 Feb 1876)
Baptism Place: Keresztespüspöki, Borsod, Hungary
Father: Karoly Kovacs
Mother: Erzsebet Meszko
FHL Film Number: 623394
Now I found these places on the map also. Egerszalok, Heves, according to mapQuest, is a 162 km trip from Nagyhalasz. Keresztespupoki, Borsod is @ 138 km from Beszterce. My question is how probable is it that these baptism records were associated by some tree poster rather "loosely" because they happened to fit a general timeframe? The PA death certificates for Wendel Szabo and his wife Julia Szabo ms Kovics do not give a birth location or parents' names (except for Julia's maiden name) for either. Wendel's has an "age at death" indicating he was born about 1872. Julia Szabo ms Kovacs has a birth date of 27 Feb 1877 though I do not know how reliable this is. It matches the baptism date for the Keresztespüspöki, Borsod Julia Kovacs. I did look for possible matches closer to the couple's last known residence in Hungary and had no luck but these records are difficult to sort with transcriptions and also a limited knowledge of adjacent parishes and such.
