It is absolutely plausible that Friedrich returned as the war began... they are found in the 1910 census... and Friedrich's manifest, which I found today shows him immigrating to the US in 1907

Also the Special Inquiry lists Terezia and Fridih as having been Discharged, which could lead one to believe that one or both were hospitalized. In any case the main manifests shows they had NO ticket to their destination.
