Records from early 1900's

Classification: Query
Surnames: Langenek, Langeneck
Good afternoon,

I am looking for information on my family who came here, I assume, around 1905 from Austria-Hungary. They later returned so my g-g-grandfather could fight in World War I. Are there records showing people returning to Austria Hungary? My great grandfather and his mom returned in 1920 and she is listed as a widow so I assume my g-g-grandpa died in the war. His name is Friedrich Langenek and I did find that name listed on the casualty list on the Kramerius website for World War I but I can't confirm it's the same guy.

According to their Ellis Island record, my great-grandfather (same name as his dad) and his mom came from Vukovar (now Croatia, after the war it was Yugoslavia). I'm not sure where to go next to find out more about my g-g-grandfather and his war record. Any recommendations? Are there records of people immigrating to that area as well?

Thank you for your time!
