Hello everyone,
I'm hoping I get some results here. Before I make my quest to find my gg grandmother w/in the confines of this post. Can anyone tell me, if they've ever heard of people putting down informtation that might be false on a death or birth certificate?
The reason I'm asking is cause I have a death certificate of my gg grandmother, Ellen (Rosencrantz)Haynes.
It states she was born in Nova Scotia, but there are no records of her birth up there. Then just the other day, I recieved a letter from a cousin in NS, Canada, and it was written by my grand aunt (grandfather's sister) that Ellen was born in Germany.
But it doesn't say where in Germany. It makes sense since there are no records of her birh in Canada. Has this every happened before, false information on a death certificate, maybe to hide a a nationality, ethnicity or something?
I wondered if her family was Jewish as well.
I looked into a link on some site, and hit had it's fair share of Rosencrantz on there. So I'm thinking that if they were Jewish, when they came to the states, they wanted to hide the fact that they were, and told everyone else in the family that they were born there in Canada. She emigrated to the U.S. after living in NS for some time, and eventually died there.
Maybe the informant, her daughter Mary, didn't know she was actually born in Germany.
I'm beginning to think this is what happened.. and think to myself, this was long before WWII. She died 35 yrs prior to all that
Am I making much sense here? I tend to ramble on....what I'm trying to say is...what should I believe, a document, or the story from a family member who actually knew my gg grandmother's origins. But not in detail.
