I am descended from one of three Nieterts, believed to be brothers, who came to the US over a time span between 1830-1860. They were born in Lanenhagen, Schaumberg-Lippe, Hanover, Germany. I have a Nietert genealogy that mentions one who settled in Wapakoneta, Auglaize Co, Ohio: Godlieb, who married Maria Rabe and had a son Henry John Frederic b 13 April 1832, still in Germany. That sure sounds like a candidate for your ancestor. Henry John Frederic married Elizabeth Arnott, but the genealogy doesn't list any sons who would carry on the name.

I recently had a Y-chromosome DNA test on one of my Nietert cousins. The Y-chromosome is what makes a male a male. A man inherits his Y from his father, who got it from his father, who got it from his father.... If you know any Nieter males who would like to take a DNA test, a match would certainly confirm that you're related to the other Nieterts who came to America.
