This is one for you German name experts out there. In my research I find several people who are called in some places Johann Something Something. Then in other places the Johann is dropped. Two pertinent examples are Johann Jacob Baumhauer and Johann Leonard Weegar, immigrants from Wuerttemburg to Rhinebeck, NY. In subsequent records they are referred to as Jacob and Leonard. Is Johann some sort of diminutive that many German boys were called? Also are the names Johann, Johannes and Hans all versions of the same name? Thanks for any input.
