Hi, Mike--Here's a small bit of info I picked up via surfing the Internet for more info on my Brodie's:

Hierome Opie (HO) Claughton 1828-1897; in 1851 President Fillmore appointed Mr.Claughton as Consul to the island of St. Martin, West Indies. HO Claughton m. Abt 1852 Jennie ATWELL. She was the daughter of Daniel ATTWELL and Jane BRODY of St. Martin. Jane Brody was a daughter of Dr. BRODY, a surgeon in the British Navy. Source: "Washington Past and Present A History," Ed., JC Proctor, Vol 1, Lewis Hist Pfubl Co NY 1930; via Genealogy.com Library; see pgs 879-880.

This is sort of a "Random Act of Kindness" re: your search for Atwell info, but---if you have any info on Brody or Brodie of the locale, please let me know. I'm trying to straighten out the several John Brodie families of 1600'1-1700's York & Elizabeth City Co VA & vicinity. A David Brodie (1757-1819) of this group was a Sea Captain with connections in Barbados, Bermuda and perhaps elsewhere in WI; and probably more family members also had connections there.

Good luck and adios from Fred in Folsom CA
