I have some letters written from Scotland 1850 and later mentioning my gggrandfather William Ferguson who went to US (NJ and then IL). His parents complained several times that he had never written "since he left York." York England is on the northeast coast isn't it and they lived on the southern part of Scotland near Ireland so seems like York would be a strange place to depart from. Most ships to New York said they were from Glasgow nearer his home. What am I missing? Could they have meant New York or what?
