William Grant was a master grocer and lotter, born in Clyne was living in Greenhill, Clyne at the time of his marriage to Barbara. Barbara lived in Balvraid, Dornoch. They married on 23 April 1841. The Banns were called in Dornoch and in Clyne (OPR). They had the following children: JANET, born 23 June 1842 Clyne [died 14 Oct 1876] (IGI/NC51,61); JANE, born 1847 [died 10 March 1909] [married John Sutherland – see G312A] (NC51,61); GEORGE, born 1845 [died 21 February 1910] [married Catherine Murray – see G226] (NC51,61/DC) and WILLIAMINA, born 1850 [died 2 Jan 1851] and JOSEPH, born 1854 (NC61). In 1851 and 1861 the family were at Greenhill, Clyne. They had a servant, Flora Hamilton. In 1861 Barbara’s sister, Louisa Campbell, 42-year-old spinster, born in Dornoch, was living with the family. Barbara died in 1877 and is buried in Clyne. The gravestone tells that she lived at Greenhill but it is not clear whether William is buried with her. The following year George Grant married Catherine Murray. Their marriage certificate states that William Grant was a Teacher of Music. Williamina, Jessie and Jane are buried with their mother (GY54/251).
