Thank you Hugh for the info, however Moody is not just an English name. For some reason many folks think it is and for this very reason I have done a massive amount of research trying to figure out just what the origins of our name really are.
In Scotland the earliest Moody (various spellings) was recorded in the 1200's. My family is anciently of Norwegian roots where the name was probably MODI from their mythological god Thor's son of that name.
The word "modig" is Scandinavian and is pronounced Moody with the "g" being silent...it too means ~courageous or brave~.
My family came from Norway to Scotland and then probably to northern Ireland and America.
I hired a professional group of researchers in Northern Ireland to do some genealogy work for me over the summer and they found the name Moodie/Mudie and Mudy in Ireland in the early 1600's.
Rev. James Moody of Newry, Co. Down, his father was John Moody and mother Elizabeth Shannon.
They are linked to the Kennedy family with whom they intermarried. The Kennedy's and Mudie's as the name was spelled in Scotland came from the area of Beath, Ayrshire, Scotland to Northern Ireland as Presbyterians.

For some reason the Mudie name was later changed to be spelled Moody in Ireland, perhaps for a reason, but one I've not been able to uncover as yet, and it continued to be spelled that way when our family came to America.

I am still trying to find a possible link to the Rev. James Moody family of Co. Down, Ireland and hope that via yDNA or more research that I will be able to one day make that missing connection.
Thank you again for your information.
