RE: The name change. I totally understand what you are saying however on this occasion I can confirm my dad's Granny Ellen (or mad granny Ellen as she was known!) changed the family name to O'Sullivan as John Sullivan's dad, Daniel, was considered a "black sheep" and they wanted to be rid of protestant association. We think Ellen worked as a servant in a "Big House" that was run by a Scottish Episcopalian family and this seems to have very much affected her. That, combined with her meeting Casement after his landing (she is named in 2nd edition of his diaries released after the establishment of the Republic)seems to have changed the course of the family.
