I think Ruth is supposed to be Reeth, a parish in the Yorkshire Dales, around 8 miles from Leyburn. It’s half a mile above the conflux of the rivers Swale and Arkle in Arkengarthdale, which is what I think is meant by the reference to Irkindale.
