THORNTONs in Yorkshire

I am looking for more information - sources to find out more about my ancestors - Samuel Jnr and his father, Samuel Snr THORNTON. It was claimed that Samuel Jnr was born in Barnsley and that his father was a woollen merchant then. Samuel Jnr married a Sarah MADDEN (aka THORN) and had three children but when Sarah was convicted and transported to Australia, she only took two kids with her, her husband followed as a free settler in 1824. What I would like to know is how to find relevant information or source about this - the child being left behind - any registered workers in between 1780s to 1820s in West Yorkshire and which parishes would be best to look for records. Also if there is anyone who are looking for THORNTONs would be great if they could be referred to me. Any help appreciated - thanks in advanced, Darlene Thornton.
