I am looking for a way to find out more about my ancestors, Samuel THORNTON and his father, Samuel THORNTON! Samuel jnr was claimed to be born in Barnsley, YORKSHIRE and that his father was a woollen merchant but so far I cannot find anything on those. Samuel Jnr married to a Sarah MADDEN/THORN who was sent to Australia as a convict along with 2 of her 3 children, leaving behind a child - a boy. Samuel Jnr came to Australia as a free settler and set up a pub business then. So what I would like to know how I should look for are - 1. more info on THORNTONs in Barnsley, any occpation lists registered in then around 1780s to 1800s, any source I can find out more about the child being left behind - he was never brought to Australia! Name unknown as it was not mentioned in the death certificate of both Sarah and Samuel THORNTON. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance. Darlene Thornton.
