Wow! Thanks for all the clues to follow up. I'll work through descendants' names and hopefully got some corroboration. I have very much hit the guess work / deduction stage with this William Jordan.

He ended up in Australia and it looks like he ended up with dementia. He spent 14 months in a gaol as a result of "lunacy" before being cared for by his family in Penwortham South Australia.
