He left a will! You can order a copy from the central probate registry at www.gov.uk, but I think the National Probate Calendar gives the clue to the mystery:

"BOFFEY William of Darnhall Cheshire farmer died 21 October 1896 probate LONDON 9 December [1896] to Mary Barnett spinster Charles Boffey farmer and Richard Barnett licensed victualler Effects £548 14s."

Mary also left a will (although I think she fibbed a little!)
BOFFEY Mary of Bank Farm Darnhall Cheshire widow died 18 March 1915 probate
London 4 May 1915 to Annie Fitton (wife of John Fitton) and John Boffey farmer.
Effects £913 19s 8d.
