Hi Neil
Sorry for the delay in replying, but we have been on holiday - staying at Delamere about 6 miles "as the crow flies" from Plemenstall! Church now called Plemstall, on the edge of the village/hamlet with open farmland behind it. Had a quick look round the church yard, but no sign of any MORGAN graves, although it was rather chilly and a lot of the older gravestones are very difficult to read. Hoole is now a suburb of Chester and is completely built up. I do not know if there are any old buildings remaining there. I can send you photos of Plemstall churchyard if you would like them.
I put Matthew MORGAN and Susannah together for a number of reasons:
Matthew was the only adult male MORGAN to be buried at Plemenstall that year (if he had been a child then it would have said who he was the child of when he was buried - it didn't); his place of residence was Hoole; his last known child (Martha) was baptised 14 Jan 1725 (I usually expect births at that time to be about every 2/3 years).
Susannah was a widow when her son John was baptised 15 Dec 1728; her son was not described as a bastard; her place of residence was Hoole.
When I made my last posting I had forgotten that I had already found the marriage of Peter MORGAN and Rebecka CAMPBELL in 1730, so Susannah could not have been the mother of Peter's later children. My remark about it being the pragmatic thing to do was more in jest! In the UK it was illegal for a woman to marry her deceased husband's brother until the early 20thC, although it did happen. In my own tree one lady had children by her late husband's brother. They did not marry until 10 years later when the law had changed.
Assumed adult burials (no son/daughter of):
1. Mathew buried 24 Aug 1719
2. Matthew buried 4 Aug 1728
3. Susannah buried 8 Feb 1739
4. Margret buried 12 Feb 1732
Assumed child burials (because it names who they were son/daughter of):
5. Jno. buried 7 May 1719, son of Matthew
6. Matthew buried 9 Sep 1721, son of Matthew
7. Catern. [Catherine] buried 3 Apr 1724, daughter of Matthew
8. Peter buried 2 Feb 1736, son of Peter
Looking at the baptisms to Matthew, there are some gaps (again I expect to see baptisms about every 2 years):
(1698 marriage of Matthew MORGAN (senior) and Catherine BENNETT)
John 1699
James 1701
Mathew 1703
Peter 1705
Mary 23 May 1708
Catherine 1714
Joseph 1718
Martha 1725
John 1728
Maybe Catherine (BENNETT) died after Mary in 1708 and Matthew senior remarried. There is a marriage at Tilston of Matthew MORGAN senior and Mary EDWARDS, after banns on 21 June 1708. Though that marriage is a bit close to the supposed death of the first wife!
Also a baptism of Rebecca day of Matthew MORGAN junior of Carwards (?) on 8 Aug 1708, also at Tilston.
The death of adult Matthew (senior?) in 1719 would fit with Joseph being his last child. Margret who died 1732 could be Matthew senior's 2nd wife and now widow.
If Matthew junior born 1703 married Susannah in 1720, then the Matthew (son of Matthew) buried 9 Sep 1721 could be their 1st child. No baptism found for him, nor of an expected child born about 1725. Then baptisms for Martha and John in 1725 and 1728.
It's all a bit tortuous and there are possibly missing baptisms, burials and marriages all over the place!
Just seen your note about burial of Catherine and her mother Catherine (wife of Matthew)on same day in 1724 - so that knocks part of my theory on its head!
