Joseph Melville Broughton was born 17 Nov 1888 in Raleigh, NC. He graduated Wake Forest in 1910. He attended Harvard University Law school between 1912-13. He served as a NC State Senator between 1927-29. He was governor between 1941-45. In 1948 he was elected to the US Senate. He died 6 Mar 1949 and is buried at Montlawn Park in Raleigh. His father was also named Joseph Melville Broughton. He was born 15 Feb 1852 and was married to Sallie Harris. They had two sons (Joseph M. and his brother Ernest H.) that I am aware of. Joseph died 21 Dec 1917. Joseph's father was Joseph Broughton who was born 4 Feb 1812 in North Carolina. Joseph was married to Mary Polly Bagwell in 1834. They had four sons and three daughters. Joseph Melville was the youngest. Joseph's father was Joseph L. Broughton born c1766 and married Mary Polly Stancil 28 Mar 1796. They had 5 sons and two daughters. Joseph was the youngest.
