Gillian, many thanks for your offer to help out with Lincolnshire Gash families. I am not sure whether the Gash people in my tree come from Lincolnshire, but I feel that they must given that they married into Lincolnshire families, albeit in Illinois, USA in two cases.
My extended family tree has three Gash/Winter marriages. The Lincolnshire name Winter became Winters in the US.
1. George Winter born 1832 at Sudbrook, Ancaster, Lincs, son of Richard and Ann Winter; married Mary Gash, born Oct 1818 in England on 15 May 1858 at Ancaster, Lincs. The family emigrated to Illinois, USA, circa 1857.
I see references on this Board to a Gash family from Caythorpe, Lincs where three siblings emigrated to Henry Co, Illinois. Likewise, at least four of George Winter's 11 siblings also emigrated to Henry Co, Illinois (ie John, Charles, Sarah and Jane). As this Caythorpe Gash family had a daughter Mary born circa 1818, it seems possible that both Mary and George could could have been part of both families starting a new life in the US.
2. Jane Modd married Edward Gash in Jan 1876 at Henry County, Illinois, US. Jane was born Jane Winter, daughter of Richard and Ann, in 1843 at Sudbrook, Ancaster, Lincs. She and her first husband, James Modd, emigrated to America in May 1872. Edward Gash died in Oct 1879 of consumption, and Jane Gash married Robert Broadbent in Illinois in May 1881. Edward Gash was born in England, but I don't have his age. Presumably he was of a similiar age to Jane.
3. Charles Winters born 1860 in America married Mary J Gash, born Oct 1868 in England, during 1887 in Henry County, Illinois. Charles was the son of John and Susan Winter, and the grandson of Richard and Ann Winter, all of Ancaster, Lincs. Charles's father John died from wounds in the American Civil War in 1864 at Nashville Tennessee, and Charles was reared by his uncle, George Winter (see above).
Are you able to shed any light on these Gash people, or is this information too vague for you?
Thanks, Jean
