Glad you found it of interest. My Whittons came from the vicinity of Newtyle but are not related to yours. With regard to commendations my only thought is that a newspaper archive might have a reference. This is because medal awards are normally listed and perhaps a "local" newspaper for Angus area might have picked up such information.
